What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees
were exposed to a potential explosion hazard due to improper storage
of the incompatible chemicals of an organo peroxide and acetone:
(a) These products were observed, on or about May 13, 1991 being
stored adjacent to each other and open in the outside storage
building located west of the sprayup/layup building. Employees were
exposed to the risk of chemical burns and/or smoke inhalation in
that separate storage areas or a substitution of chemicals had not
been established. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable
abatement methods to correct this are:
1. Providing separate storage areas for the organo peroxides and
acetone; or,
2. Substituting the acetone with a more compatible solvent such as
ethyl acetate or methyl ethyl ketone. Consideration of these
substitutes must take into account their lower Permissible Expo-
sure Limits as opposed to acetones.
