Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of uncontrolled release of the pendant lines during disassembly of a crawler tower crane: (a) East side of the Radisson Hotel construction site, MANITOWOC 4000W VICON crawler tower crane (Model Number 4000, Serial Number 40340) - During disassembly of the tower, the pendant lines were not secured to prevent uncontrolled movement, on or about 10/26/91. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1. Follow manufacturer's recommendations and adhere to cautions for disassembly of the MANITOWOC 4000 tower crane mounted on crawler such as: (a) Use a come-along to pull the equalizer forward to obtain necessary pendant slack for the removal of the pendant lines. (b) Block and extend track. 2. Train employees to remove pins from inside tower or from opposite side using a punch rod and hammer.
