Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to
cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of being struck and/or crushed by a
descending
automotive lift:
(a) Shop, Brake area, the lift next to the office and one outside lift
were not equipped with automatic safety devices.  The safety locking
device on the middle lift was stuck in place and was not operable, on
or about 8/31/92.
(b) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method
to correct this hazard is to install an automatic mechanical device
to hold the lifts in the fully extended position (safety locking
device) as recommended in American National Standard B153,1-1981
Paragraph 3.3.10 and 3.2.1.
