Section 5 (a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) 06/10/88 - Employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from steel beams. At the old Huyck Felt Mill in Annselaer, NY., employees were in the process of putting up a fence around a stream behind the mill. While doing this, they walked over steel beams over the stream without fall protection. The beams were approximately 15' above the stream. Employees walked from the south side of the stream to the north side and back again. Feasible methods of abatement include, but are not limited to, the use of safety belts or lifelines, driving or walking around the building instead of across teh steel beams.
