Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety adn Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees are exposed to the hazard of a steam explosion in molten aluminum. Employee(s) are exposed when barrels of water/sludge suspension are set over and open die cast furance which contains aluminum at 1150 degrees f. An accident with the lift truck could cause a barrel to drop a mix water and molten aluminum, which could cause a steam explosion. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to eliminate the practice of placing containers with water in them near or over molten metal.
