Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
Embalmers were exposed to the hazard of being infected by HBV/HIV
through possible direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids.
Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this hazard, among
others, are:
a) Training and education of embalmers on precautionary measures, proper
work practices and employees understanding the concept of universal
precautions as it applies to their work.
b) Soiled linen shall be bagged at the location where it was used and
shall be placed and transported in bags that prevent leakage.
c) All embalmers shall be offered Hepatitis B vaccinations in amounts
and at times prescribed by standard medical practice.
d) Developing follow-up prcedures for implementation after possible
exposure to HBV/HIV of embalmers that includes appropriate testing
(e.g., HBV/HIV) of the employee (after obtaining proper consent) and
other appropriate procedures as outlined by the CDC.
