Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The

employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) Employees performing inspecting/stacking operations in the mask
department are exposed to biomechanical stresses to hands, wrists,
arms and shoulders/backs. Such exposure could result in cumulative
trauma biomechanical disorders such as, but not limited to,
tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to reduce
these hazards are:
1) Develop a written program for ergonomics. It shall establish goals
and objectives to meet these goals.
2) Implementation of a training program for supervisors and employees
on awareness of ergonomic disorders, importance of reducing
biomechanical stress to the body and proper work techniques.
3) Study the feasibility of machinery and job station redesign to reduce
repetitive arm reach and/or wrist movement.
4) A periodic review of the program to evaluate its overall
effectiveness.
