Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) 1/8/92 Automotive Shop, in Montgomery Ward. Employees were exposed to the hazard of serious crushing injuries from dropping hydraulic lifts while working under vehicles on these lifts. Lifts # 2,3,4,5 & 7 the safety locking devices would not work. Feasible and acceptable methods among others to correct the hazard is to: 1. Repair or replace the mechanical safety locking devices (Dogs) on all their lifts. 2. Instruct and train employees in the proper use of mechanical safety locking devices for hydraulic lifts. 3. Conduct periodic inspections of these lifts as recommend- ed by the lift manufacturers to insure that these safety locking devices and all other components are in safe operating condition. Also to remove defective lifts from service until they are rendered safe to operate. 4. Have manufacturers operating instructions available in the automotive shop area.
