General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a) Employees cleaning the meat packing plant with high pressure (270 p.s.i.) and high temperature (135-145 degree fahrenheit) water through hoses not equipped with nozzle that shut-off automatically upon release were potentially exposed, if an employee inadvertently released the nozzle, to the hazards of potentially being burned, and struck by the water stream and thrashing hose and nozzle. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install nozzles designed for high pressure and temperature utilization that shut-off automatically upon release.
