Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that
employees were exposed to falling loads.
A) BMW Service Area; The #3 automotive lift was not maintained in
a safe operating condition. The safety catch on this lift was
rusted in the open condition, which, in the event of a hydraulic
system failure, would allow the automobile to fall on the employee
working below. (01-10-95)
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method
to correct this hazard is to lubricate the safety catches and
maintain the automotive hoists per the manufacturer's

employees were exposed to injury from fragments of an exploding
grinding wheel.
A) Saab and BMW service shops; Employees were exposed to severe
injury in the event of the bench grinder abrasive wheel exploding
while grinding on the side of the wheel.
A feasible method to control this hazard is to instruct employees
immediately to not grind on the side of the wheel and to explain to
the employees the potential injury resulting from an exploding
wheel.ing
