Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards than were causing of likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees are exposed to unknown concentrations of ozone that could potentially exceed concentrations that may produce significant respiratory distress with dyspnea, cyanosis and pulmonary edema. Employees are required to enter the ozone room to place and remove household items and furniture. Some employees have experienced increases of respiratory tract irritations, sinusitis and headaches. On 3-3-93. 0.3 parts per million (ppm) of ozone was measured in the ozone room after the ozone unit was turned off. The detected level exceeded the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) recommended ceiling limit of 0.1 ppm. Employees required to enter the room when the ozone unit is running may be exposed to much higher level of ozone. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1. Installation of an alarm system to warn the employees when the room has reached levels of ozone that would create an immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH - 10 ppm) environment. OSHA suggests that the alarm be set up at not higher than 5 ppm. 2. Conduct air monitoring periodically and prior to entering the room. 3. Installation of a timer on the unit that would turn the machine off when desired levels are reached. 4. Relocate the on-off switch to a position outside the decontaminated area. 5. Provide employees with proper respiratory protection.
