1 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: %% The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The hazard of rupture of 3/4" schedule 40 PVC plastic pipe being used to supply compressed air to machines and hand tools. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to completely enclose the above ground portion of the plastic air line in a conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration as stated in American National Standards Institute/American Society of Mechanical Engineers ANSI/ASME Standards B31.8 - 1986, gas transmission and dis- tribution piping systems.
