SECTION 5(A)(1) OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970: THE EMPLOYER DID NOT FURNISH EMPLOYMENT AND A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM TO EMPLOYEES IN THAT EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO POTENTIAL INJURY FROM CRUSHING CAUSED OF THE UNEXPECTED LOWERING OF AUTOMOTIVE LIFTS WHILE EMPLOYEES WERE WORKING UNDER THE LIFTS WITHOUT SAFETY DEVICES: A) CARS BLOCKED ONLY WITH TWO-BY-FOURS, WHICH ARE USED TO LIFTUNEVEN CHASSIS AND ARE SUBJECT TO FALLING ON EMPLOYEES. TRUCKS ARE UNSAFE OR HOIST NOT DESIGNED FOR TRUCK USAGE; AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODTO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSTALL SAFETY DEVICES ON ALL LIFTS AND TO HAVE DEFECTIVE PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED PER THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH ANSI B-153-1-1981. PERIODIC INSPECTIONS TO ENSURE THAT ALL COMPONENTS ARE IN SAFE OPERATING CONDITION ARE RECOMMENDED.
