Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic pipe
rupturing or exploding that
was being used as a pressure air line distribution system throughout the
auto shop at pressures
in excess of 100 p.s.i.:
Auto Shop:  PVC plastic pipe was being used to distribute compressed air
to the tire
changing machine and to air line drops used for various air tools and tire
servicing.
While ultimate responsibility for correcting the hazard rests with the
employer, given
his/her superior knowledge of the workplace, feasible and acceptable
methods to correct
this hazard, among others, include:
1) Install black iron piping for the air distribution system;
2) Completely enclose all above ground portions of the plastic service in
a shatter
resistant conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection
from
external damage and deterioration; or
3) Install approved impact resistant ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)
pipe.
Abatement certification is required for this item - use the CERTIFICATION
OF
CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET for this purpose.
