General-duty citation text
ITEM 1 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to bursting pipe: (a) Door Shop - Compressed air used to power the hand held staple guns and drills was piped in an above ground 3/4" PVC pipe system that was not enclosed in a conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection should the PVC pipe explode. American National Standards Institute B31.8 1986, Section 842.43 prohibits the above ground use of PVC pipe for compressed air conveyance. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC pipe with a steel pipe system designed for compressed air
