Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a
recognized hazard of electrical shock or burns and lacerations:
(a)   F/V Bering Empire:  Employees working in the engine room had
occasion to work on a Allen-Bradley control box that had an
inoperable reset control and was using a metal wrench to
bypass
the reset control to operate the hydraulic pump system.  This
condition exposed employees to contact with live contact
terminals and bare terminal wires.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to repair the reset button on the control
panel.
(b)   F/V Bering Empire:  Employees working in the machine room had
occasion to use a bench grinder that had the ON-OFF switch
removed and the plug in was used for operation.  This
condition
exposed employees to personal injury in the event that the
equipment could not be shut off in an emergency.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to replace the ON-OFF switch.
(c)   F/V Bering Empire:  Employees working in the laundry room had
occasion to use a 120-volt extension cord that had numerous
splices and repairs that were not corrected to the original
insulation integrity of the cord.  This condition exposed
employees to contact with live conductors.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of
abatement would be to insure the splices are approved or
replace
the extension cord.
