Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a recognized hazard of shock, burns, or electrocution by contacting exposed electrical conductors carrying a live voltage ranging from 120 to 480 volts alternating current. a) M/V Mr. B: Employees working in the void of the engine room had occasion to work near the 120/240 volt single phase, and the 480volt three phase circuit breaker boxes that had exposed, live current carrying parts. This condition exposed employees to shock, burns and/or electrocution. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install plastic or metal inserts into the open spaces in the circuit breaker boxes.
