Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a palce of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire and explosion: a) On the vessel "New ERA" located in Hump Cove, Resurrection Bay, AK on August 3, 1989, the wiring for an electric gasoline pump was not appropriate for a Class 1 Division 1 location; specifically an orange extension cord entered unprotected through the threaded conduit-port in the bottom of the provide power. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method for abatement of the hazard is to ensure that all electrical wiring and equipment used to dispense gasoline complies with National Electric Code, Article 501 for Class 1 Division 1 areas.
