Section 5(a)91) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential crushing injuries: (a) Hydraulic elevator - Employees transporting supplies and products were exposed to potential falls from the un- guarded elevator platform down to the open landings and to crushing by nip points created by the platforms traveling past such landings. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install car enclosures with interlocked doors or gates. For additional guidance, refer to ANSI/ASME A17.3-1986 Safety Code For Existing Elevators and Escalators.
