General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Welding Department: On 6/4/90 and before employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck and seriously injured by steel troughs during a welding operation. The troughs were suspended from an overhead hoist by means of C-clamps attached to the troughs, which were not designed for this application and were subject to slipping. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method would be to use rigging and workpiece holding equipment designed and rated for this application; and insuring that workpieces are placed on stable, solid surface or fixture during welding; and insuring that no parts of employee's bodies are beneath suspended loads duringplacement and removal of workpiece onto the surface or fixture.
