Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that health care workers, specifically nurses, licensed practical nurses and housekeepers, were exposed to the risk of contracting Hepatitis B through possible direct contact with blood or the body fluids. Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing this risk, among others are: 1) Offering the Hepatitis B vaccine to all nurses, licensed practical nurses and housekeepers. 2) Documenting evaluation and follow-up procedures to be used following exposure to blood or body fluids. NOTE: Refer to CDC's Immunization Practices Advisory Committee recommendations regarding HBV post exposure prophylaxis published in the June 8, 1985 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
