General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being burnt by hot molten plastic during the purging of horizontal injection molding machine #'s 3, 4, 15 and 20. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install or reconnect, as appropriate, on all the various injection molding machines in the shop, a purge sheild interlock as specified in ANSI B151.1-1984, Section 6.3.6, American National Standard of Plastic Machinery--Horizontal Injection Molding Machines. An installed purge shield interlock would prevent the plastic purging from taking place when the purge shields are in the raised position.
