Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to:

Exposure to blood and bodily fluids.  Staff who work closely with clients
as well as housekeeping and laundry personnel were exposed to the
hazard of being infected by HBV through possible direct contact with
blood or body fluids.  Feasible and useful abatement methods for
reducing this hazard are: Offer hepatitis-B vaccination to employees
who are at a substantial risk of exposure to blood and/or body fluids.

a) Exposure to blood or body fluids.  Employee in the laundry
department
was exposed to the hazard of being infected by HBV and/or HIV
through possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids.  A
feasible and useful abatement method for reducing this hazard, among
others, is: Provide training to laundry workers on precautionary
measures, epidemiology, modes of transmission and prevention of
HIV/HBV.  In addition, employees must receive training regarding the
location and proper use of personal protective equipment.  Training
should specify that all linens contaminated with blood and/or body
fluids should be treated as potentially infectious.

b) Exposure to blood or body fluids.  An LPN at the establishment was
exposed to the hazard of being infected by HBV and/or HIV through
possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids.  A feasible
and useful abatement method for reducing this hazard, among others,
is: Ensure that no workers engage in tasks or activities which involve
exposure to blood or other potentially infectious fluids before
they participate in a training and education program.
