General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, EMTs and Paramedics were exposed to the hazard of becoming infected with HBV, HIV and other bloodborne pathogens through possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids. A feasible and useful abatement method for reducing this hazard, among others, is: (a) Provide accessible handwashing facilties so that employees on the ambulances can quickly wash any exposed skin that becomes contaminated with blood or body fluids, and can wash their hands after their gloves are removed. This could be done by providing either an appropriate antiseptic hand cleanser in conjunction with clean cloth/paper towels or antiseptic towelettes.
