General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or about 10/27/89, the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire/exposion and toxic chemical inhalation from the release of toxic gases/vapors which could result in serious bodily and/or fatal injuries. Chemicals which were identified to be incompatible by their material safety data sheets and the National Fire Protection Association, Chapter 49, were stored together: a) Racking Area - Chemical Storage/dispensing: 1) Hydrochloric Acid - 6 containers, approximately 35 gallons each and Caustic Soda Diaphragm #2 Flake - 1 drum, approximately 55 gallons. Incompatible with oxidizing material. 2) Sodium Hydroxide - 3 containers, approximately 55 gallons each. Incompatible with Hydrochloric Acid. 3) Macrome Oxidizer Flake - Chromic Acid mixture dry oxidizer #NA1463, 5 containers, approximately 100 lbs. each. Incompatible with acids alkalies. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to separate the chemicals according to type and compatibility to each other as prescribed in the material safety data sheets and the National Fire Protection Association, Chapter 49.
