General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees; in that, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the ascending/descending elevator car or falling into the open hoistway. Hoistway door was not provided with an interlock device. Among methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Equip the hoistway door with an interlock device. 2. The interlock device shall hold the door in the locked position by means of gravity or by a restrained compression spring, or by both or by means of positive linkage. 3. The interlock shall lock the door in the closed position before the elevator can be operated.
