employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
a crushing hazard created by the sudden and unpredictable descent of
vehicles elevated overhead by hydraulic lifts.
1) Service Bay Area
Three (3) Gilbarco twin post drive thru lifts.
Among others, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
include:
a) Instruction of employees in the proper use of the mechanical safety
device and ensure their routine use and instruct employees to avoid
rising lift control mechanism that do not have a "dead man" or
constant pressure provision.
b) Establishment and implementation of weekly inspection procedure
recommended by the manufacturer to assure the safe operation of the
lifts.
c) Post manufacturer's operating instruction - Reference, Publication
ANSI (B)53.1-1981, Section 3.1.3, 3.1.10
