General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an airborne concentration of N, N-dimethylethylamine (DMEA): On October 6, 1994, the machine operator at the isocure machine in the Core Molding area was monitored for 427 minutes. He was found to be exposed to an 8-hour timeweighted average (TWA) of 4.37 ppm, and at levels of 7.62 ppm, 7.0 ppm, 7.40 ppm, and 15.11 ppm during four short-term exposure limit (STEL) readings. A December, 1988, survey published in the American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal suggests an 8-hour TWA of 3 ppm, and a STEL of 5 ppm for DMEA. Ashland Chemical, Inc., a manufacturer of DMEA, recommends the same two exposure limits respectively. Among other methods m one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is a more efficient local exhaust ventilation system.
