Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a.) In the Infection Control Unit (wings 1 & 3); health care employees
are exposed to the hazards of being infected by Hepatitis B virus (HBV)
and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through possible direct contact
with blood or other body fluids. Feasible and useful abatement methods
for reducing this hazard include, but are not limited to:
1.) Making available, at no cost, Hepatitis B vaccinations.
2.) Providing training and education on precautionary measures,
epidemiology, modes of transmission, prevention of HBV / HIV, proper
work practices, the concept of universal precautions, handling of
infectious waste and procedures to be followed in the event of an exposure.
3.) Update the above training on at least an annual basis.
4.) Developing a post exposure evaluation and follow up practice.
