Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazards associated with manual lifting tasks such as:
frequency of the item
selection action; awkward postures; and forceful exertions exceeding
weight action limits and
maximum permissible limits:
In the perishable warehouse; employees engaged in the order selection
process were exposed
to hazards that resulted in actual and potential musculoskeletal injuries
and disorders.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is:
a.) Implementation of a general multifaceted abatement program based on
full ergonomic
evaluation of the selection process. This program would include, but not
be limited to:
1.) Engineering and administrative controls.
2.) Consultant assistance.
3.) Medical management program.
4.) Training programs.
b.)Specific suggested control methods may include:
1.) Limit torso flexion to a range of 6 to 10 degrees from the vertical.
2.) Limit lifting, selecting and loading, to work heights of belt level
to shoulder level.
3.) Utilize a pull hook to obtain elevated and distant items.
4.) Utilize methods or devices to keep items closer to the front of its
selection location.
5.) Limit weight of individual items such that they do not exceed
calculated maximum
permissible limits.
6.) Educate employees on body biomechanical basics and on utilizing
proper lifting techniques.

7.) Classify jobs as to the nature and extent of exertion and establish
a rotation schedule that
allows variation in distribution and frequency of musculosketal activity.
8.) The arms should be kept as close to the body as possible during the
lifting task.
9.) Avoid twisting when handling items.
10.) Limit the work day for employees working extended periods in cold
environments. Provide
warm rest areas.
