Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employee in that: Employees were exposed to the hazard of falling/tripping upon entry/exiting elevator cars #1 and #2. Car platform sills and the hoistway edge of landing sills measured approximately 6 inches above/below the floor level. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. To adjust and maintain the clearance between the car-platform sill and the hoistway edge of any landing sill to less than 1/2 inch thru a quality pre-maintenance and maintenance program.
