Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or about 10/31/92 the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed in moving convey- or belt in that no stop chains or cords and audible or visual alarm devices were provided to stop conveyor in an emergency or alert employees that the conveyor was about to start: Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: (a) Install an emergency stop cord/chain at all points along the conveyor where potential hazards exist, as stipulated in ANSI B.20.1 - 1957, Section 11b. (b) Install an alarm device which would be activated by the controller device starting the conveyor and continue for a required period of time before the conveyor starts. Warning signs shall be provided along the conveyor to indicate that conveyor may be started at any time and personnel should keep clear as stipulated in ANSI B.20.1-1976, Section 5.11.2.2.
