Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to antineoplastic drugs. (a)Plant Wide Employees are exposed to antineoplastic drugs such as but not limited to Cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, carmustine and chlorambucil during the emptying and counting of tablets. Exposure may cause skin necrosis, elevations in sister chromatid exchanges and mutagenic activity in the urine, on or about November 17, 1993. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO IMPLEMENT A MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM THAT ESTABLISHES A BASELINE BY CONDUCTING A COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT INCLUDING DIFFERENTIAL. AS WELL AS PERIODIC GROUP SCREENING FOR URINE MUTAGENESIS OR FOR THE PRESENCE OF CERTAIN CYTOTOXIC DRUGS IN THE URINE.

(a)RX Returns, Incorporated Employees are exposed to antineoplastic drugs such as but not limited to cisplatin, andriamycin, and chloroform during the cleanup of broken vials and bottles. Exposure may cause severe skin and eye irritation, possible allergic reaction, and/or laryngeal paralysis, on or about November 17, 1993. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO IMPLEMENT GENERAL SPILL PROCEDURES AND TRAIN EMPLOYEES WHO ARE DESIGNATED TO CLEANUP SPILLS AND LEAKAGE."

"AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INCORPORATE A LAMINAR FLOW (VERTICLE) BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINET (BSC) FOR EMPLOYEE'S USE BUT WHERE ONE IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, A RESPIRATOR WITH A HIGH EFFICIENCY FILTER, PREFERABLY A POWERED AIRPURIFYING RESPIRATOR (PAPR) USED BY PERSONNEL WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO USE RESPIRATORS AND PROVIDES THE BEST PROTECTION UNTIL THE BSC IS INSTALLED.
