General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire from the improper storage of highly reactive oxidizing agents: (a)12/10/96 In the warehouse where Class 3 oxidizer(s) (65-75Calcium Hypochlorite) and Class 1 oxidizer(s) (Trichloroisocyanuric acid) were not stored in accordance with NFPA document #430-1995 in that the minimum distance to incompatible materials was not maintained in segregated sprinklered storage. Specifically, various sized plastic containers of Sun Burst brand Calcium Hypochlorite in granular form were stored directly next to various sized plastic containers of Sun Stabilized Pool Chlorinating Concentrate in tablet form which contains approximately 99Trichloro-s-triazinetrione. Feasible means of abatement include but are not limited to: 1) Maintain minimum separation of at least 12 feet. 2) Erect a barrier wall that conforms with NFPA for fire rating between the two chemicals. 3) Stack an inert material between the two chemicals. 4) Isolate the calcium hypochlorite to a separate building.
