Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The emloyer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that
employees were exposed to concussion and multiple traumatic
injuries and/or death from falls while working aloft the steel
beams on 9/7/93.
The employer did not ensure that employees were protected from
falls while working aloft the steel structure.
Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable abatement methods
to correct this hazard is:
1. Ensure that employees are correctly using safety belts and
lanyards and static lines while working aloft between the 10'
level and 25' level.
2. Provide personnel lifts or ladders that employees can
safety perform there duties.
3. Develop Standard Operating Procedures and provide training
for employees that they are cognizant of the hazards for
falling while working aloft.
