Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees when compressed air is transmitted through polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, exposing employees to the hazard of being struck by flying fragments: a.Polyvinyl chloride PVC pipe was installed throughout the plant and used to transmit compressed air to machinery and hand held tools. Feasible abatement methods to correct this condition may include but are not limited to, 1) enclosing the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) line in a conduit pipe of sufficient strength to provide protection form external damage and prevent employees from being struck by flying fragments; 2) install a pipe system designed for compressed air as recommended by the American National Standards Institute/American society of Mechanical Engineers (ANSI/ASME) B31.8-1986 sections 842.32, 842.43 and 849.52 (b) Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping System.
