Section 5(a)(1): of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that
were causing, or
likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to
the hazards of being
crushed, struck, or pinned.
On or about March 14, 1996
In the Service Department
Eight Globe GFSR-27L Twin Post/Side-by-side lifts, which when raised to
full extension
reach a height of approximately eight feet, did not contain functional
safety locks necessary
to maintain the lift in the extended position.
Abatement methods to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to:
1) Following the inspection procedure recommended by the manufacturer to
ensure that the
locking device and all other operating components are in safe operating
condition.
2) Training employees on the inspection procedure for the proper use and
safe operation of
the lift, including the mechanical locking device.
3) Follow the criteria in the American National Standards Institute's
"Safety Requirements
for Construction, Care, and Use of Automotive Lifts" (B153-1-1991) and the
Automotive
Lift Institute's "Lift It Right" (SM93-1).
