Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer
did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recogn
ized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm
to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by collapsing struc
tures: WORKSITE: The front porch roof was inadequately supported in that: 1. The
wood columns, placed on several small pieces of plywood were not properly secur
ed in place between the roof and floor joists. 2. The masonry columns used to su
pport the floor joists were old, missing mortar between the bricks and one colum
n had a piece of wood in place of a missing brick. Among other methods, one and
acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Ensure the supporting structu
res are properly designed and installed.
2. Develop and implement procedures on acceptable methods to install supporting
structures. 3. Instruct and train employees on the acceptable methods to be foll
owed. 4. Utilize other available engineering feasibility, technology and methods
