Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by collapsing structures: WORKSITE: The front porch roof was inadequately supported in that: 1. The wood columns, placed on several small pieces of plywood were not properly secured in place between the roof and floor joists. 2. The masonry columns used to support the floor joists were old, missing mortar between the bricks and one column had a piece of wood in place of a missing brick. Among other methods, one and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Ensure the supporting structures are properly designed and installed. 2. Develop and implement procedures on acceptable methods to install supporting structures. 3. Instruct and train employees on the acceptable methods to be followed. 4. Utilize other available engineering feasibility, technology and methods.
