Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire and chemical exposure hazard from storage of class 1 flammable liquids in the basement area of the facility: a) Approximately 50 gallons of flammable paints were stored in the basement of the facility thereby exposing employees to a potential fire hazard. GENERAL METHODS OF CONTROL APPLICABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: 1) Relocate the class 1 flammables to a storage room located above grade level.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a violent chemical reaction: a) Zinc plating area- Drums of caustic soda and potash were stored with drums of acidic Macro-Brite, nitric acid and Rodib which contained nitric and fluoric acid. b) Laboratory- One gallon containers of sodium cyanide were stored with one gallon containeres of hydrochloric acid. GENERAL METHODS OF CONTROL APPLICABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: 1) Separate the storage of caustics and acids in order to prevent the potential for intermixing. 2) Separate the storage of sodium cyanide from the hydrochloric acid.chloric
