Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: %% (a) The two jacketed reactors used for the production of dye were not equipped with high temperature alarms to alert employees of an exothermic condition and the possible release of toxic air contaminants. (b) The two jacketed reactors used for the production of dye were not equipped with an automatic cooling system to prevent overheating of the reaction and the possible release of toxic air contaminants. ABATEMENT NOTE: General methods of abatement include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Install, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation to detect temperatures outside the prescribed range for this reaction and to initiate a cool down of the reactor.
