Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to cumulative trauma disorders resulting from tear/trimming operations: IN THE ABSENCE OF ENGINEERING CONTROLS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: MANAGEMENT COMMITMENT: MANAGEMENT IS COMMITTED TO REDUCING OR ELIMINATING EMPLOYEE EXPOSURES AND REPETITIVE MOTION HAZARDS. WORKSITE ANALYSIS: 1. SCHEDULE A VISIT FROM THE COMPANY'S NEW INSURANCE CARRIER. INQUIRE ABOUT SPECIFIC IDEAS FOR WORKSTATION DESIGN AND SCHEDULING OF REST BREAKS. REQUEST THAT THEY PROVIDE UPDATES TO THE COMPANY REGARDING ANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS THAT MAY REDUCE EMPLOYEE EXPOSURES. 2. REVIEW ANY EXISTING SURVEYS THAT WERE PERFORMED TO DETERMINE IF PRIOR RECOMMENDATIONS CAN BE INCLUDED IN ANY WORKSTATION OR POLICY CHANGES. HAZARD PREVENTION AND CONTROL: 1. CONTINUE TO ACTIVELY EXPLORE NEW TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS CRYOGENICS, LASER TECHNOLOGY AND MOLD DESIGN. 2. REDESIGN WORKSTATIONS. POSSIBLE DESIGN OPTIONS COULD INCLUDE ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT AND TILT WORK SURFACES, CUT-OUTS IN THE WORK SURFACE, ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED CHAIRS, AND FOOT RESTS. 3. REPLACE AND/OR REVISE THE PIECE-RATE SYSTEM AND INCORPORATE ADEQUATE REST BREAKS INTO THE WORKDAY. (OSHA REGION 1 ERGONOMIST HAS RECENT INFORMATION TO AID IN CALCULATING FREQUENCY AND DURATION OF REST BREAKS). 4. COMPLETE THE TOOL REDESIGN PROJECT. TRAIING AND EDUCATION: 1. PROVIDE TRAINING AND EDUCAITON TO EMPLOYEES AS ERGONOMIC CHANGES ARE MADE TO WORKSTATIONS. DISCUSTT WITH THE COMPANY'S INSURANCE CARRIER THE POSSIBILITY OF INSURANCE REPRESENTATIVES PRESENTING ERGONOMIC EDUCATION TO EMPLOYEES. 2. ESTABLISH AN ERGONOMICS COMMITTEE. COMMITTEE MEMBERS COULD ALSO TEST NEW TOOL AND/OR WORKSTATION DESIGNS AND AID WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW IDEAS TO REDUCE EXPOSURES. MEDICAL MANAGEMENT: CONTINUE TO PROVIDE CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT TO EMPLOYEES WHO EXPERIENCE SYMPTOMS. INCLUDE MEMBERS OF THE ERGONOMICS COMMITTEE WHEN DISCUSSING LIGHT DUTY
