Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of severe burns and/or contusions: TOOL ROOM: ON OR ABOUT MARCH 29, 1994, EMPLOYEES ENGAGED IN THE OPERATION OF THE JOHNSON GAS FURNACE (MODEL C-142) AND WORKING IN AND AROUND THE TOOL ROOM WERE EXPOSED TO SEVERE BURNS AND/OR CONTUSIONS DUE TO A FURNACE EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE. AMONG OTHER MOTHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: A.SCHEDULE AND CONDUCT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ON A REGULAR BASIS TO INSURE THAT THE JEOPARDY OF EMPLOYEE SAFETY IS AS MINIMUL AS POSSIBLE AND FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE OF THE FURNACE. THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW (BUT NOT LIMITED TO THOSE ITEMS) SHOULD BE CHECKED DURING THE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SERVICE: 1.BRUSHES AND SPRINGS OF THE ELECTRIC MOTOR 2.PRESSURE SWITCH 3.REGULATOR 4.GAS SOLENOID 5.BURNERS AND BURNER PORTS 6.SPARK PLUG AND ITS POSITION 7.FIRE SCANNER 8.HIGH TEMPERATURE CEMENT 9.OTHER RELEVANT ITEMS B.COMPLY WITH THE NFPA 86, 1991, STANDARD FOR "OVENS AND FURNACES", OR AN EQUIVALENT, FOR THE DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND OEPRATION OF THE FURNACE. C.FOLLOW AND COMPLY WITH THE FURNACE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND RECOMMENDED WORK PRACTICES.
