Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or
about 5/7/91, the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employ -
ment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause deat h
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) The hazards of being crushed by descend vehicles on hydraulic
lifts in the event of hydraulic or air failure.
Mechanical safety locking device (dogs) were not provided,
not used or not in working order on a lift located in the
left hand bay of the two bays on the garage.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method amond others
to correct the hazard is to:
1) Install or reinstall missing mechanical safety devices (dogs)
or support the vehicle by 4 jackstands or equivalent means.
2) Instruct employees in the proper use of mechanical safety
devices and ensure their routine use.
3) Establish and implement periodic (daily) inspections of the lift
before use and subsequent repair as needed with original
equipment parts.
4) Post manufacturer's operating instructions.
