Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
a fall hazard of 20 feet or greater from working off an elevated work
platform not designed for the purpose:
a) Maintenance personnel utilized a mobile ladder stand attached to the
fork of the fork truck to change light bulbs throughout the facility.
This ladder stand did not meet the design criteria set forth by the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B56.1 thus exposing
employees to injury from a fall, April 17, 1990.
Among others are feasible and acceptible method of abatement to correct
this hazard is to remove the existing device from service and purchase
or manufacture a platform conforming to the requirements of ANSI B56.1-
1975 or latest edition.
