Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by projected materials: a.On or about 6/27/95, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck or punctured by projectiles from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, having a line pressure of over 100 psig which was used to transport compressed air for the radiator repairmen. Fragmentation of the pipe can occur because of fatigue caused by cold contents, and or ambient temperatures, non-compatibility of pipe with its contents, etc. Among other methods, three feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1.An Acrylonitrite, Butadiene Styrene (ABS) pipe could be used. 2.Polyvinyl vinyl chloride pipe (PVC) with that is completely enclosed in steel pipe covering or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration. 3.Metal piping could be used.
