General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees are subjected to the possibility of crushing, broken bones, and death while exposed to the hazards created by an overhead crane which was not properly suspended, in the 60 ft. hose area, and the use of a spreader bar which was bent and twisted. The crane runway at the aisle end was modified and suspended by Grade 7 high test chain. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to have the crane suspension system properly repaired under the direction of a qualified engineer or the equipment manufacturer and test the crane to 125% of the rated load. The spreader bar shall also be inspected, repaired, and proof-tested by a qualified engineer or a representative of the equipment manufacturer.
