What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons: routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
Health care workers (e.g., nurses and nurse's aides) were exposed to
the hazard of being infected by HBV and/or HIV through possible
direct contact with blood or other body fluids.
Feasible and useful abatment methods for reducing this hazard, among
others, are:
1) Making available Hepatitis B vaccinations for health care workers at
substantial risk of directly contacting body fluids;
2) Thorough training and education on precautionary measures,
epidemiology, modes of transmission, risks to the fetus, prevention
of HBV/HIV, proper work practices, the concept of "universal
precautions", handling of infectious waste, and procedures to be
followed in the event of exposure to body fluids or a needlestick;
3) Developing follow-up procedures for implementation after possible
exposures that include HBV/HIV testing of the source and employee
(after obtaining proper consent) and other appropriate procedures
as outline by CDC.
