Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The hazard of driving without adequate rest. On several occasions employees were required to drive company vans for several hours after being on duty for more than 15 hours following 8 consecutive hours off duty. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop a work hour policy that prohibits employees from being required or from being allowed to work schedules that do not allow for adequate rest period in any 24 hour period.
