Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
a crushing hazard from being struck by the tires of a traveling straddle
crane:
a) Steel storage Yard Area - Drott travelift crane with obstructed
vision, on or about April 4, 1986.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is:
1) The use of personnel deflecting guards around the leading edge of
the front and rear wheels.
2) That visibility be provided to the operator in all directions of
movement by properly selected and mounted mirrors for the operator.
3) The use of audible horns or alarms and visual wearing devices to
alert workers to the movement of the unit.
